Shielded Wire

 Shielded Wire & Cable

Shielded wire and cable are electrical conductors designed with an additional shielding layer to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio frequency interference (RFI), signal noise, and electrical crosstalk. Compared with standard electrical wire, shielded cable provides better signal stability, safer transmission, and stronger protection in industrial, automation, CNC, communication, audio, and control system applications.

A typical shielded cable includes one or more copper conductors, insulation, a shielding layer, and an outer jacket. The shield may be made from braided copper, aluminum foil, tinned copper, or a combination of foil and braid. This structure helps protect low-voltage signals, motor control lines, sensor wiring, VFD cables, and communication circuits from unstable electrical environments.

What Is Shielded Wire Used For?

  • CNC machines: spindle motor wiring, stepper motor cables, servo motor cables, VFD signal lines, and controller connections.

  • Industrial automation: PLC wiring, sensors, encoders, robotics, machine tools, control cabinets, and production equipment.

  • Communication systems: data transmission, low-voltage signal wiring, RS485, Ethernet-related control lines, and instrumentation circuits.

  • Audio and electronics: microphone cables, speaker systems, test equipment, signal cables, and sensitive electronic devices.

  • Automotive and electrical systems: battery monitoring, control modules, sensor wiring, charging systems, and equipment harnesses.

Types of Shielded Wire and Cable

 1. Braided Shielded Cable

Braided shielded cable uses woven copper or tinned copper strands around the insulated conductor. It provides strong mechanical protection, good flexibility, and excellent EMI resistance. It is commonly used in CNC machines, industrial equipment, audio systems, and motor control wiring where cables may move or experience vibration.

 2. Foil Shielded Cable

Foil shielded cable uses aluminum foil or polyester-aluminum tape to provide full coverage around the conductor. It is lightweight and effective for high-frequency interference protection. Foil shielding is often used for communication cables, signal cables, sensor cables, and low-voltage control circuits.

 3. Foil and Braid Shielded Cable

Foil and braid shielded cable combines full-coverage foil shielding with durable braided shielding. This dual-shield design offers stronger protection against both high-frequency and low-frequency interference. It is suitable for VFD wiring, servo motor cables, CNC spindle motor cables, and demanding industrial environments.

 4. Tinned Copper Shielded Wire

Tinned copper shielded wire uses copper conductors or shielding coated with tin to improve corrosion resistance and solderability. It is ideal for humid, outdoor, marine, automotive, and industrial environments where long-term reliability is important.

 Advantages of Shielded Electrical Wire

  • Reduces EMI and RFI: shielding blocks unwanted electromagnetic and radio frequency interference.

  • Improves signal stability: helps prevent data loss, false signals, unstable sensor readings, and communication errors.

  • Protects CNC and automation systems: reduces interference from spindle motors, VFDs, servo drives, and high-current power cables.

  • Enhances equipment safety: proper shielding and grounding help reduce electrical noise and improve system reliability.

  • Supports long service life: quality insulation, conductor material, and shielding improve durability in demanding environments.

How to Choose the Right Shielded Wire

  • Check the application: choose signal cable, control cable, motor cable, VFD cable, or communication cable according to the system.

  • Select the shielding type: use foil shielding for high-frequency noise, braid shielding for flexibility and durability, or dual shielding for stronger protection.

  • Match conductor size: choose the correct AWG or mm² based on current, voltage, cable length, and voltage drop requirements.

  • Consider insulation and jacket: PVC, XLPE, rubber, PUR, or other jacket materials should match temperature, oil, moisture, UV, and abrasion conditions.

  • Confirm grounding method: shielded cables need correct grounding to reduce noise and avoid ground loop problems.

 Installation Tips for Shielded Cable

  • Separate power and signal cables: keep shielded signal lines away from high-current power cables where possible.

  • Ground the shield correctly: follow equipment instructions for one-end or both-end grounding depending on the system design.

  • Avoid sharp bending: maintain a suitable bend radius to prevent conductor or shield damage.

  • Use proper connectors: shielded connectors, cable glands, terminals, and clamps help maintain shielding continuity.

  • Inspect before use: check insulation, jacket, conductor, and shield integrity before installation.

 Shielded Wire FAQ

 What is shielded wire?

Shielded wire is electrical wire with a conductive shielding layer around the insulated conductor. The shield helps block EMI, RFI, and signal noise.

When should I use shielded cable?

Use shielded cable when wiring is near motors, VFDs, power cables, CNC machines, servo drives, communication equipment, or other sources of electrical interference.

Does shielded cable need to be grounded?

Yes. Shielded cable normally needs proper grounding to work effectively. The best grounding method depends on the equipment, cable type, and electrical system design.

What is the difference between foil shield and braid shield?

Foil shielding provides full coverage and is good for high-frequency interference. Braid shielding is more durable and flexible, making it suitable for industrial and moving cable applications.
